Cartoon Clowns
- KoKo the Clown
- Bozo the Clown
- Krusty the Clown
While most of us are only old enough to remember cartoon clowns as being colorful characters that did whacky stuff on the morning cartoons we all sat through faithfully for hours each Saturday, cartoon clowns have been around since even before the days of Disney.
Koko the Clown
The first fully animated series of a cartoon clown was created by Max Fleischer, who, along with his Brother, Dave, opened an animation studio called “Out of the Inkwell Studios” and later named it “Fleischer Studios.” In the early 1900’s, Max invented a machine called the rotoscope which allowed him to mix live action films with animation to make some unique animated cartoons. Koko the Clown was one of the first Out of the Inkwell Cartoon characters.
One of the earliest cartoons titled “The Cure,” featured the live-action cartoonist (Max Fleischer) interacting with the cartoon clown, Koko, switching back and forth between animation and live action. See videos below. Fleischer Studios was purchased by Paramount Studios in 1941 and MaxFleischer continued to make Koko the Clown cartoons through the 1950’s.
Bozo the Clown
Bozo the Clown came about as the result of a series of read-along books developed by Alan Livingston in 1946, whereby children could listen to an album narrated by the character Bozo, while simultaneously reading a book and turning the pages as prompted. The first book was entitled “Bozo at the Circus,” and was picked up by Capitol Records. Bozo became the record company mascot, and several actors in different cities were hired to portray Bozo to meet the demands of the character’s ever-increasing popularity.
One of those actors, Larry Harmon, ended up buying the rights to the character name, and re-naming him “Bozo, The Most Famous Clown.” With the rights to the character, Harmon opened an animation studio and began producing a series of “Bozo the Clown” cartoons, but the cartoons never became as famous as the live Bozo character. See video below. Does the video make you more scared of clowns?
Crusty the Clown
Sometimes spelled with a “K”, Krusty the Clown is the brilliant creation of artist Matt Groening. Krusty first appeared as a cartoon short on the Tracy Ulmann Show, along with other shorts of the now-famous Simpsons. When the Simpsons moved into its own regular television time slot, Krusty the Clown became a regular fixture on the show, hosting his own television show within the Simpson’s show, and is characterized as Lisa and Bart Simpson’s most beloved cartoon clown. With his bad attitude, coupled with his bad habits of drinking and smoking, Krusty the Clown epitomizes everything a children’s cartoon clown shouldn’t be, in some of the best comedic situations on television today.
There you have it, how three totally different cartoon clowns came to life to entertain multiple generations of the young and the young-at-heart.
Yucko the Clown
One real bad boy has been stalking and lurking round corners ready to perform his walk-by venomous routine on the unsuspecting public. He is a lunatic and quite un-child friendly that person, thing, “Coco the Clown” wish he wasn’t and an absolute menace to society. One could describe him as the worst insult clown since Andrew “Dice” Clay. Only venture his way, if you have thick skin. This insult comedienne has the straw that breaks the camel’s back. His very un-clown like persona is amazingly funny, strictly for adults only but still a person who should be approached with caution.
Yucko is featured on “The Howard Stern Show”’ on a regular basis performing his loud mouth and foul antics and is more commonly known for “The DAMN! Show” – If you hold anything near and dear to you, keep it away from this clown because this clown will not hestitate to lay a crack on the oldest granny. He also featured on MTV2’s “Stankervision.” The show only ran for 8 episodes and snippets of this jokester can be found on . If after watching those videos aren’t enough, and you happen to crossYucko the Clown in the street, just run. However you would be insulted by a barrage of insults before you realized what happened. Unfortunately for those unsuspecting individuals, he is not afraid of holding back on the truth. So be prepared if you are gravitationally challenged, unfortunate looking or a female!
The Origins: Yucko the Clown was born from the imaginations of Lee Saunders, Waco O’Guin and Matt Chastain in February 1998 to a local cable station in Athens, GA. However by the May of that year, the show was cancelled because of Yucko’s carnal antics with a dog. Then in Feburary of the follow year, the show made a surprising reappearance on the Georgia Theatre Show, in which the now famous “Scary Wolf” pranks had been shown. This made the The DAMN! Show more popular than ever and saw the show sell out at The Georgia Theatre on 28th September 2000. See Scary Wolf video below. The DAMN! Show has gone from strength to strength with Yucko the Clown, the character is absolutely hysterical – but be warned that Yucko can offend you from 5 miles away!
Homey D. Clown
Clowns are often the subject of chats about fears, joys and just general silliness. Homey D. Clown is a combination of all three of these characteristics and he was also a regular on the popular TV show “In Living Color.” Damon Wayans plays Homey D. Clown. He is supposedly an ex-con named Herman Simpson who is working as a clown as part of his parole agreement. He refuses to perform the “usual clown antics “though. If anyone attempts to make him do so, he usually states “I don’t think so…Homey don’t play dat.” He then proceeds to hit them on the head with a tennis ball filled sock.
Homey’s goal in life now is to get even with “The Man” who he feels is “holding him down.” At the end of most of the sketches about Homey, he leads a group of children in a sing-along in which he ends up turning in the angry/paranoid person he really is. He then goes into a rant, intimidates the children and gets them repeating it word for word. Do not worry though the “children” are played by adult cast members.
Homey D. Clown was very popular in the early 1990s on the show In Living Color. Some people loved the skits others did not. The idea of a parolee doing his “sentence” by performing as a clown is definitely unusual. He is anything but clown like most of the time. He is short tempered, usually refuses to perform clown like activities unless paid for them upfront or fighting the person who requested the trick with the previously mentioned tennis ball filled sock.
Is he scary? To most people the idea of an ex-con clown is indeed scary. To make matters worse he often goes off into rants about “The Man.” He blames the “The Man” for causing most of his problems in life, including his situation of being on parole and having to play a clown. If you’re within bopping range you should
also probably be scared of that sock with the tennis balls.
Obviously, Homey D. Clown is not a morally wholesome character so why not also give him an illegitimate son who looks just like him right down to the clown make-up and shares Homey views on many things.
Homey D. Clown is indeed famous, many people today still use his key phrase “I don’t think so…Homey don’t play dat.” He also is easy to relate to for many people. He has very little actual clown like activity other than wearing the clown suit and make-up. Are people scared of him? Well, small children definitely could be but they really should not be watching much of the show anyway. Should adults be scared, well, it could be some people’s worst nightmare to hire a clown and have him behave the way Homey does toward their children. Let’s face it many people and children have clown phobias anyway.

Krusty the Clown
Krusty the Clown: Good vs Evil
Krusty the Clown is a fictional cartoon character on The Simpsons television show. Krusty, real name Herschel Shmoikel Pinchas Yerucham Krustofski, is the son of Rabbi Hyman Krustofski. Krusty always wanted to be a clown which was against his father’s wishes. When the Rabbi found out that Krusty was performing comedy without his knowledge, he disowned his son and didn’t speak to him for 25 years until Bart and Lisa Simpson helped them reconcile. While entertaining troops in the Gulf War, Krusty met a female soldier. To protect his comedic career, he prevented her from assassinating Sadam Hussein. She later gave birth to his daughter Sophie.

Krusty started his show business career as a street mime in his home town of Tupelo, Mississippi. In January 1989, his television show The Krusty the Clown Show debuted in Springfield. One classic interview was with Robert Frost where Krusty ended the interview by dumping snow on his guest. Krusty’s main sidekick was the evil Sideshow Bob until he was replaced by the more loyal Sideshow Mel. Krusty received millions of royalties from products and services he endorsed, but many of the products were dangerous such as jagged metal prizes in Krusty cereal boxes. He lost $44 million when his Krusty Korporation sponsored the 1984 Olympics with an illegal promotion that backfired. His restaurant Krusty Burger has been closed down numerous times for health code violations. He has also committed tax fraud, faked his death, and spent time in prison. Krusty hates children but owns and operates Kamp Krusty for kids. Krusty suffers from depression and bad habits include pornographic material, gambling, cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. Despite all this, Krusty ran and got elected to Congress as a Republican.
Even though Krusty hates children, his shows and licensed products target mostly children who make up most of his fan base. Krusty is a likeable character in spite of his bad habits and selfish acts. Many fear him since he will go to any length to get what he wants, regardless of who is hurt in the process. However, he does have a conscience and usually ends up doing the right thing. He is far from the likes of other famous clowns such as Bozo, Ronald McDonald, or Clarabelle. Although not as sinister as Pennywise in IT, the Joker in Batman, or Captain Spaulding in House of 1,000 Corpses and Devil’s Rejects, he sometimes comes close and cannot be completely trusted.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space movie -horror or comedy? Something about Killer Klowns from Outer Space sounds like a comedy but to some a simple glance at these evil killers will ruin their day. As if the creepy clowns here on earth aren’t going to meet their clown quota of creeping people out. Coulrophobics (people with an unhealthy fear of clowns) shiver at a glance of clowns and their harmless looking toys. However the idea of killer clowns from outer space does add justification for the extreme dislike and fear of these red nosers. This movie belongs on the same marquee as Stephen King’s IT because these are a must see for Killer clown lovers and a definite don’t see for clown haters. So if the thought of Killer clowns, Scary clowns, Creepy clowns and the like run you away, this movie will definitely set you back a few visits with your creepy killer clown therapist.
While writing this article I decided to pop in Killer Klowns from Outer Space to give myself a fresh image of these evil guys who turn a small town into a smorgasbord of cotton candy wrapped humans…who are stored and then drained for their blood clowns through crazy straws used by the clowns.
Comedy or horror? These Killer Klowns literally suck the town dry and would’ve gotten away if-it-weren’t-for-those-meddling-kids from the local make out spot who just so happens to witnesses the spaceship’s crash…. and of course the night wouldn’t be complete until the teens check it out. I won’t ruin the movie for you but I will say the town got more than the typical face painting, balloon animal making happy clowns in the circus that we take our kids to see hands down.
Pennywise – It The Clown Pennywise is one of the main characters in Stephen King’s novel, IT. He is the monsterous nemesis that brings terror into the hearts of children, especially a group of seven misfit kids who banded together as an unlikely gang of heroes intent on stopping this fiend. Pennywise disguises himself as a familiar childhood character that’s well loved and trusted by children everywhere. He has shocking, red hair on the sides of his head reminiscent of Bozo the clown. His white face and red button nose portrays a happy clown framed by his pristine, fluffy, white collar. His blue and yellow clown costume is shiny and soft to the touch. Like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, Pennywise uses this comforting image of happiness to lure his victims to their death. When he bears his teeth, they are as sharp as the claws on his white gloved hands.
“We all float down here,” is what Pennywise tells all his victims before he grabs hold of them. He takes them deep in the dark, dank sewers of Derry, Maine, and feasts on his victims’ bodies. This psychopathic clown is in fact a monster who has lived beneath the earth for eons. About every thirty years or so, this shape shifting entity emerges from its slumber to feed. Pennywise, the Dancing Clown has honed his hunt towards children because of their creative, impressionable minds. Children are more open to the fantastic, the fantasy and the possibility of a world outside what adults call “reality”. Pennywise abuses this fact by enticing his victims and scaring away his enemies. He offers children balloons, a paper boat, a chance to see one’s dead father, anything to get them within his grasp. Pennywise’s true form is never really known. His main façade is the clown but he can also turn himself into a spider to scare away his enemies. Pennywise is given the name “IT” by the group of children known as the Losers Club because they’ve become very familiar as to what he really is. Its true form lives in a place called the deadlights, which lies outside our physical realm. Anyone who looks into the deadlights becomes insane. To Pennywise, humans are toys or food. He prefers to feed on children partly because of their innocence and their fear. Fear, to Pennywise, adds flavor to the meat.
One of the biggest and strangest mysteries is the well know clown car routine. In this gag, these clever Bozo’s can manage to squeeze more bodies into the average VW bug than the average carpool hands down. Colorful clown car acts have entertained and shocked audiences dating back to the early 1950’s and still continue to shock and amaze. These joyful jokesters take pride at the amazement the clown car routine brings, all the while filling every inch of the car with clown body parts. This trade secret has been a mind boggler for many years and always leaves one question on the viewer’s mind, “How is that possible?” Trade secret or clown car magic? In my opinion it’s a bit of both! No two clown car routines are the same so feel free to share yours.
