Famous Clowns have laughed and scared their place into the limelight of the past, present and sure to be the future. Strangely enough, clowns have been making appearances beyond birthday parties and grand openings. In fact clowns are making and have made their mark on both the silver screen and television, but why they were is interesting thing? Let’s start with the SAFE famous clowns! Safe meaning not intentionally scary.

We have Bozo the clown who first appeared in 1946 who started as a comic and worked his way up to a trendsetting show on the WGN network in Chicago and sparked an interest with local news channels nationwide. Surely this isn’t the clown that would chase you down a dark alley! I think! Then there is Ronald McDonald who had a much scarier introduction to the world but that creepy look wasn’t working for happy little tykes of 1963. To be honest that’s a bad look even for today’s freaky standards! And let’s not forget Krusty the clown from The Simpson TV series who made his debut in 1989.

He still hasn’t disappointed audience with his less than enthusiastic performances. The Krusty the Clown Show is a must see if you’re into famous clown cartoons.

Well are they? That depends on who you ask! To the average person that the answer wills no but to a coulrophobic these happy go lucky jokesters can turn a birthday party for a group of kids into a nightmare. I’ve never witnessed this phobia in action but I’m sure it’s no fun watching an adult flea for his/her life because Bozo and friends showed up in full clown mode to make balloon dinosaurs. lol . Not to sound insensitive or anything but that’s exactly the reaction that this phobia can bring out. F.y.i the next time you send out invitations to you childs birthday party ,If there are clowns scheduled to appear please remember to state that in bold letters because it might ruin a guest’s day or even your own depending on how serious the persons coulrophobia might be.

Insane Clown Posse Loved but Hated by Millions

Perhaps no musical act today has created more of a furor than the Insane Clown Posse. Despite being slammed repeated by critics who have called their music “cartoonish”
and “excruciating,” they have sold more than 6.5 million records worldwide and earned a devoted following of “Juggalo” fans who have adopted a lifestyle around the band and its music. The Insane Clown Posse started as a group of friends who engaged in backyard wrestling matches in Oak Park, a working-class suburb of Detroit, Michigan. Joseph Bruce, aka Violent J, became involved in the professional wrestling scene in the Midwest, becoming close friends with wrestlers Rob Van Dam and Sabu. Violent J eventually began getting involved in hip-hop music with friends Joseph Utsler, aka Shaggy 2 Dope, and his brother John Utsler, aka John Kickjazz.  

In 1991, Insane Clown Posse turned from gangsta rap to an acid rap style popular locally. The band also developed an entire mythology closely influenced by horror movies, including wear clown makeup resembling the main villain from “It.”

After recording three albums that received minimal interest, things changed for the Insane Clown Posse with their album “The Great Milenko.” Originally slated to be released by Disney-owned label Hollywood Records, it was pulled just before its 1996 release because of questions about its “objectionable” lyrics.
The album was later picked up by Island Records, and helped by the controversy it sold more than 1.5 million copies.

Since then, Insane Clown Posse have gained a devoted following with fan, who often refer to themselves as “clownz” or “Juggalos.” Their songs of alienation have touched a nerve with teenagers and young adults from poor backgrounds who feel as though they are outcasts. These fans wear Insane Clown Posse clothing and copy the band’s preferences, such as the Faygo soda.

One of the popular emblems of the Insane Clown Posse is the “Running with a Meat Cleaver” logo. This is a take off on one of the band’s most popular songs, “Meat Cleaver,” which imagines the band as horror villains chasing their victims with meat cleavers.

Songs such as “Hall of Illusions,“ “Hokus Pokus” and “The Joker’s Wild” helped bring the Insane Clown Posse recognition and a larger audience. However, their only song to chart in the Billboard Top 100 was their take on a Christmas song, called “Santa’s a Fat B*tch,” which peaked at No. 67 in 1999.

Along with music, the Insane Clown Posse have also remained active in wrestling, making appearances with major organizations such as World Championship Wrestling and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling along with promoting their own independent Juggalo Championship Wrestling. True to their backyard roots, their wrestling organization features extreme violence that is derided by some as “junk” wrestling.

Clown Paintings have always given a classic feel to whatever room there hung in regardless of the whole clowning image. While most of us are only old enough to remember cartoon clowns as being colorful characters that did whacky stuff on the morning cartoons we all sat through faithfully for hours each Saturday, cartoon clowns have been around since even before the days of Disney.

Koko the Clown

The first fully animated series of a cartoon clown was created by Max Fleischer, who, along with his Brother, Dave, opened an animation studio called “Out of the Inkwell Studios” and later named it “Fleischer Studios.”  In the early 1900’s, Max invented a machine called the rotoscope which allowed him to mix live action films with animation to make some unique animated cartoons. Koko the Clown was one of the first Out of the Inkwell Cartoon characters.

One of the earliest cartoons titled “The Cure,” featured the live-action cartoonist (Max Fleischer) interacting with the cartoon clown, Koko, switching back and forth between animation and live action. See videos below.  Fleischer Studios was purchased by Paramount Studios in 1941 and MaxFleischer continued to make Koko the Clown cartoons through the 1950’s.

Bozo the Clown

Bozo the Clown came about as the result of a series of read-along books developed by Alan Livingston in 1946, whereby children could listen to an album narrated by the character Bozo, while simultaneously reading a book and turning the pages as prompted. The first book was entitled “Bozo at the Circus,” and was picked up by Capitol Records. Bozo became the record company mascot, and several actors in different cities were hired to portray Bozo to meet the demands of the character’s ever-increasing popularity.

One of those actors, Larry Harmon, ended up buying the rights to the character name, and re-naming him “Bozo, The Most Famous Clown.”  With the rights to the character, Harmon opened an animation studio and began producing a series of “Bozo the Clown” cartoons, but the cartoons never became as famous as the live Bozo character.   See video below.  Does the video make you more scared of clowns? 

Crusty the Clown

Sometimes spelled with a “K”, Krusty the Clown is the brilliant creation of artist Matt Groening.  Krusty first appeared as a cartoon short on the Tracy Ulmann Show, along with other shorts of the now-famous Simpsons.  When the Simpsons moved into its own regular television time slot, Krusty the Clown became a regular fixture on the show, hosting his own television show within the Simpson’s show, and is characterized as Lisa and Bart Simpson’s most beloved cartoon clown.  With his bad attitude, coupled with his bad habits of drinking and smoking, Krusty the Clown epitomizes everything a children’s cartoon clown shouldn’t be, in some of the best comedic situations on television today.

There you have it, how three totally different cartoon clowns came to life to entertain multiple generations of the young and the young-at-heart.

Yucko the Clown  

One real bad boy has been stalking and lurking round corners ready to perform his walk-by venomous routine on the unsuspecting public. He is a lunatic and quite un-child friendly that person, thing, “Coco the Clown” wish he wasn’t and an absolute menace to society.   One could describe him as the worst insult clown since Andrew “Dice” Clay.   Only venture his way, if you have thick skin.  This insult comedienne has the straw that breaks the camel’s back.  His very un-clown like persona is amazingly funny, strictly for adults only but still a person who should be approached with caution.  

  Yucko is featured on “The Howard Stern Show”’ on a regular basis performing his loud mouth and foul antics and is more commonly known for “The DAMN! Show” – If you hold anything near and dear to you, keep it away from this clown because this clown will not hestitate to lay a crack on the oldest granny. He also featured on MTV2’s “Stankervision.”  The show only ran for 8 episodes and snippets of this jokester can be found on .  If after watching those videos aren’t enough, and you happen to crossYucko the Clown in the street, just run.   However you would be insulted by a barrage of insults before you realized what happened. Unfortunately for those unsuspecting individuals, he is not afraid of holding back on the truth.  So be prepared if you are gravitationally challenged, unfortunate looking or a female! 

 The Origins: Yucko the Clown was born from the imaginations of Lee Saunders, Waco O’Guin and Matt Chastain in February 1998 to a local cable station in Athens, GA.  However by the May of that year, the show was cancelled because of Yucko’s carnal antics with a dog. Then in Feburary of the follow year, the show made a surprising reappearance on the Georgia Theatre Show, in which the now famous “Scary Wolf” pranks had been shown. This made the The DAMN! Show more popular than ever and saw the show sell out at The Georgia Theatre on 28th September 2000.  See Scary Wolf video below. The DAMN! Show has gone from strength to strength with Yucko the Clown, the character is absolutely hysterical – but be warned that Yucko can offend you from 5 miles away!

Homey D. Clown

Clowns are often the subject of chats about fears, joys and just general silliness.  Homey D. Clown is a combination of all three of these characteristics and he was also a regular on the popular TV show “In Living Color.”  Damon Wayans plays Homey D. Clown.  He is supposedly an ex-con named Herman Simpson who is working as a clown as part of his parole agreement.  He refuses to perform the “usual clown antics “though.  If anyone attempts to make him do so, he usually states “I don’t think so…Homey don’t play dat.”  He then proceeds to hit them on the head with a tennis ball filled sock.

Homey’s goal in life now is to get even with “The Man” who he feels is “holding him down.”  At the end of most of the sketches about Homey, he leads a group of children in a sing-along in which he ends up turning in the angry/paranoid person he really is.  He then goes into a rant, intimidates the children and gets them repeating it word for word.  Do not worry though the “children” are played by adult cast members.

Homey D. Clown was very popular in the early 1990s on the show In Living Color.  Some people loved the skits others did not.  The idea of a parolee doing his “sentence” by performing as a clown is definitely unusual. He is anything but clown like most of the time.   He is short tempered, usually refuses to perform clown like activities unless paid for them upfront or fighting the person who requested the trick with the previously mentioned tennis ball filled sock.

Is he scary? To most people the idea of an ex-con clown is indeed scary.  To make matters worse he often goes off into rants about “The Man.”  He blames the “The Man” for causing most of his problems in life, including his situation of being on parole and having to play a clown. If you’re within bopping range you should
also probably be scared of that sock with the tennis balls.

Obviously, Homey D. Clown is not a morally wholesome character so why not also give him an illegitimate son who looks just like him right down to the clown make-up and shares Homey views on many things.

Homey D. Clown is indeed famous, many people today still use his key phrase “I don’t think so…Homey don’t play dat.” He also is easy to relate to for many people. He has very little actual clown like activity other than wearing the clown suit and make-up. Are people scared of him? Well, small children definitely could be but they really should not be watching much of the show anyway. Should adults be scared, well, it could be some people’s worst nightmare to hire a clown and have him behave the way Homey does toward their children. Let’s face it many people and children have clown phobias anyway.
